The California Lawyers Association (CLA) Business Law Section (BLS) is looking forward to participating in the CLA Annual Meeting, which will be virtual this year, between September 24-26, 2020.  The Annual Meeting includes MCLE courses and opportunities to network over coffee with other attorneys practicing in business law and other fields.

The Business Law Section will present MCLE courses on Everyone Needs an Expert-Effective and Ethical Use of Expert Witnesses; Is the World on Fire?  Hot Topics in Insurance; and Corporate Governance 2020 and Beyond—The Impact of COVID-19 and Social Movements.  For more information about the CLA Annual Meeting, click here.

At the Annual Meeting the BLS will also hold its signature annual Business Law Breakfast and Lifetime Achievement Award featuring a discussion by Professor David F. Larcker of Stanford University on Update on Greenium: Are Investors Willing to Trade-Off Wealth for Societal Benefits? The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Paul “Chip” Lion of Morrison Foerster!

The CLA Annual Meeting will also host meetings of the BLS Executive Committee and its 15 standing committees including the Business Law News Editorial Board.  If you haven’t done so already, consider applying to serve on one of the BLS’ standing committees or the BLN Editorial Board. Our standing committees meet on a monthly basis and work between meetings to prepare eBulletins on new case law and legislative updates, create educational programing for lawyers, draft proposed legislation and comment letters, and engage in outreach to their constituencies.  I have been a part of the BLS’ standing committees and Executive Committee for about a decade now, and look forward to attending each of the meetings and getting to talk with fellow board members and friends.  The application for BLS standing committees is available here.

More information regarding the BLS and its standing committees is available here.

In addition to the ongoing work that the BLS does as part of its substantive standing committees, the BLS and CLA also remain engaged in fulfilling the CLA’s mission statement of promoting excellence, diversity and inclusion in the legal profession and fairness in the administration of justice and the rule of law.  The CLA’s CEO, Ona Alston Dosunmu, has a great article this month on Women’s Suffrage and the Ongoing Expansion of Democracy.  The article discusses the anniversary of the 19th Amendment and the passing of Civil Rights hero, Congressman John Lewis.

Thank you for your continued involvement in the BLS and I hope that you join us for the CLA Annual Meeting!
